A New Trend in Government Research

After much lobbying in recent years it appears that we are currently experiencing the birth of a new generation of government sponsored research programmes which are specifically addressing human centred design, with particular emphasis on behavioural change in the energy and transport sectors. A recent example of the new trend is the call by the UK Technology Strategy Board (TSB) : http://www.innovateuk.org/_assets/pdf/Competition-Documents/User-CentredDesig… These new initiatives are not necessarily intended to develop new technologies or sociological models based on historical data. Instead, the programmes permit research to develop a deeper understanding of human behaviour, including issues such as perceptual and cognitive response, and design paradigms such as interaction design and emotional durability.
The possibilities for new design research in sectors such as energy and transport seem to be growing.
