The Mouse Faces Extinction


New research suggests that most of today’s children have never seen a computer mouse. Intuitive touch-screen interfaces have allowed schools to introduce children to computers at an age that would have been impossible in the past, and even toddlers have been found to be capable of using a touch screen. First designed in the 1950s, the computer mouse is rapidly becoming technologically obsolete along with several other computer controls such as foot pedals, head-pointing devices and knee-mounted joysticks. While keyboards continue to be used for writing text, new interactive technologies are rapidly overtaking the familiar mouse due to the greater freedom of human expression which they offer.…
