Nest – the learning thermostat


A new product from the people who brought us the IPod and IPhone is pushing the frontiers of home energy control. In the manner of today’s most advanced electrical appliances and gadgets, the “Nest” thermostat has a simple user interface, built-in learning algorithms and sensors for checking motion and occupancy.

The device provides internet connectivity and a simple and useable route to optimising a home heating programme. But as Phillips learned with their ambient intelligence programmes, perhaps smart sensors and built-in intelligence are not the complete route to human centred design ?
