Empathy Takes Centre Stage at the Saint-Etienne International Design Biennial

The eight edition of the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Etienne has chosen as its theme that of empathy, one which many philosophers and sociologists consider to be urgent, due to the need to re-think society so as to base it more on respect for community and for the human condition. This year’s Biennial explores the place and the role of the designer in the process of empathy. Empathy is a dialogue between a creator and a user, thus how can the designer comprehend the needs of each and everyone of us, and respond to universal expectations ? How can the designer become a mediator in complex systems such as our cities ?
