Possible Futures : Los Angeles 2013

Designers, Marketers and Branding Experts are all too familiar with the challenges of predicting future environments and life styles. An interesting example of the factors effecting the prediction of “possible futures” is the recently reprinted piece from the Los Angeles Times from 1988, which described expected typical city life in the year 2013. A read through the piece suggests the significant underestimation of technological developments in the areas of communications and media, and a significant overestimation in areas such as robotics and personal assistants. Due to the minimal physicality of the devices themselves, might it be the case that electronic and virtual tools will always develop faster than predicted ?
