Protocol Analysis

Oldie but goodie…

That is perhaps the best way of introducing Ericsson and Simon’s ground-breaking 1980s work. While much further research has been performed since the book’s first launch, "Protocol Analysis" remains an important guide even today. Many human centred design techniques rely on verbal exchanges as either part of the activity description or as the formal data itself. Despite this fundamental fact, most designers use their semantics rather liberally with little regard to the cognitive characteristics and impact of their words. "Protocol Analysis" is a must-read for any designer who wishes to communicate effectively, and particularly for the human centred designer whose bag of tricks often contains mostly language based approaches.
