“The Master and His Emissary” by Iain McGilchrist

master and emissary

A popular book which is currently being deployed in support of humanising initiatives is the text “The Master and His Emissary” by Iain McGilchrist.

The text provides a tour-de-force of hemispheric brain function and of the implications towards world creation and world view. While the text is lengthy and not immune to a few speculations, it nevertheless provides evidence of how the interaction between the evolving brain and our technologically driven world can lead to loss of empathy and care.

The RSA (see for example https://www.thersa.org/action-and-research/rsa-projects/social-brain-centre/social-brain), ourselves, and other organisations deploy material from the text in support of design interventions which directly target “right brain” neural structures.
